This training on bystander intervention and de-escalation presents tools you can use to defuse volatile situations. In this interactive workshop, bystander intervention and de-escalation will be presented in the context of self-defense and harm reduction. You will learn verbal and non-verbal techniques and tactics to de-escalate conflict, as well as the four Ds of bystander intervention – direct, distract, delay, and delegate. All of these tactics will be presented in tandem with the importance of larger scale community organizing. This course is donation-based, in order to facilitate more trainings. This training is meant to be a first step for a larger neighborhood defense initiative for those living in and around Jackson Heights and Woodside.
