The Arab American Association of New York is proud to be an active member of our Brooklyn and NYC community.
AAANY is located in Congressional District 13, and is committed to amplifying Arab American voices in our electoral process. AAANY’s first major advocacy effort was its Get Out the Vote (GOTV) initiative during the 2008 presidential elections, which was the largest ever campaign of its kind in New York’s Arab American community. In partnership with Make The Road – NY, AAANY hired over 120 Arab American canvassers, who knocked on over 8,000 doors of immigrant voters in Southwest Brooklyn, providing information about polling times and locations while collecting voter pledge cards. We look forward to building upon our nonpartisan voter engagement work for the 2012 elections.
AAANY hosts the Annual Bay Ridge Arab American Bazaar every July, uniting thousands of Arab and non-Arab New Yorkers to celebrate the best of Arab culture. The Bazaar features diverse foods, crafts, and vendors, and six hours of live music and dancing from all over the Arab world. Check out photos of the 5th Annual Bazaar here!
We are proud to participate in National Arab American Service Day, an annual event engaging Arab Americans in volunteer work in their communities. In 2011, AAANY partnered with Dare2Dream Leaders to host a Spring Wellness Festival in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. In this predominantly Caribbean and African American community, we offered free glucose screenings, nutrition workshops, healthy snacks donated by community businesses, and lots of activities, despite the rain! We even swapped dance lessons: our debke team with the local step team. See our Picasa gallery for photos, and stay tuned for the next National Arab American Service Day, open to all volunteers. In other community news, our NYPD soccer team, Brooklyn United, took the gold in 2009!
