Help us build a
stronger
NYC!
Every summer we host our Summer Youth
Program
for kids between the ages of 7-13.  The
summer program includes Arabic language lessons,
trips to the park and local library, art projects,
community service projects and Debke lessons
(traditional Arabic dancing).
The overarching goal of the
program is to allow community youth to experience the
educational and cultural opportunities that surround them
in their own neighborhoods, and also have some fun in the
process.

The Summer Youth Program runs from July 8th -
August 15 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
from 11:00 - 3:00. The cost is $60 per child and $40 for
each additional child in the same family.  The cost
includes weekly trips to museums, aquariums and
other educational excursions throughout Brooklyn.

Registration is now open.  Please contact Sayaf at (718)
745-3523 or stop by the Association to register your
child(ren).
All programs are free unless otherwise specified.

After-School Tutoring is available for kids grades
K-8.  Tutoring is available to any student, but the vast
majority are either themselves English language
learners or children of English language learners and
therefore cannot receive homework help at home.  As
part of the tutoring program, we have weekly art
projects led by Julia Kristellar, from PSI, for students
who have finished their homework early.
The program
provides a safe, creative and fun environment where
students may develop socially, intellectually and
emotionally.

A Boys Basketball Team has recently been
organized for boys ages 9-12 and 13-15.  They will
play against other community teams through out
Brooklyn.  We’re building bridges through basketball.
The team provides the boys with a productive activity
outside of academics that promotes teamwork and leadership
skills and fosters a sense of belonging to a support network.

The Princess Club (girls 5-9) meets once a week to
watch age appropriate movies that focus on gender,
cultural and self-esteem issues.  Every few meetings,
the girls discuss the movies and participate in
activities that focus on issues raised in the films.
This
program aims to provide young girls with a fun activity in
which they can also begin building a strong sense of
self-esteem.

Contact Hanan or Raja for more information.
Girl Talk (14-18) and Girl Talk Jr. (10-13) meet
once a week for activities decided upon by the group
participants.  These include health and hygiene
workshops, college/career preparedness workshops,
as well as support group sessions.
The program aims to
provide a supportive and safe space for the girls to learn
teamwork, leadership, and personal development skills that
will enable them to succeed in their academic and personal
lives, as well as encourage a positive self-identity.

Contact Hanan or Raja for more information.
It is the goal of these programs to equip participants with
skill sets that will help them gain more stable employment
and/or more confidently navigate within American society
in order to feel a greater sense of belonging instead of
relying on their children to serve as translators and guides.
ESL Classes are divided into women's and men's
classes in order to provide a culturally sensitive place
in which participants feel comfortable to learn. The
classes focus on conversation and aim to help
participants build their ability to use everyday English.

Contact Matthew for more information.
Citizenship Classes are currently only offered for
women, although men can receive tutoring if
requested.  The classes not only help the women study
for the citizenship exam, but also serves as a support
group.

Computer classes are now offered in which
participants learn basic typing skills, as well as the
basics of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Power Point,
E-mailing and navigating the Web.

Our Impact
At the end of each semester, we ask
teachers to fill out an evaluation
form for students who participated
in our after-school tutoring
program. One of the returned
evaluations was for a new
immigrant girl from Kuwait who
had been having trouble reading, as
her English was very poor.  Her
teacher marked "Much Better" (the
highest option) for every single
category.
Meet a Client
Five years ago Zahira had to leave
her two eldest daughters behind
when she and the rest of her family
moved to the United States.  She
was unable to speak English and
had little hope that she would she
her daughters again soon, or ever
have them live nearby.  After five
years, Zahira became eligible to
apply for citizenship, but failed the
exam because of her lack of
English.  She began attending our
ESL and Citizenship classes.
Within two months she improved
greatly and was able to pass her
exam the second time.  As a citizen,
she now has the hope of being able
to petition to bring her daughters
over and once again have her
family together.
